Tell us a bit about yourself? How did you get into cooking?

I am a very outgoing, determined  and creative person. Since I can remember, I was always in the kitchen trying to create new recipes. Once upon a time, my speciality was overcooked, rock hard chocolate chip cookies. This eventually turned into making milo brownies and selling them at school. Now, I am in my early adulthood creating unique sweets combining both of my cultures.

My mom used to worry that I preferred to play with dough rather than barbies. Now it all makes sense. Food has always been a important part of my family, as it always brings us together. For that reason, I loved cooking. It allowed me to join their traditions as well as surprise them with something that they love when I created a dish on my own. Throughout quarantine, I felt the need to share my family’s legacy with others. That’s how The Vakerie began.

Why Middle Eastern cuisine?

I come from a diverse household. My dad is Lebanese and my mom is Colombian. Middle eastern food has always been present in my life. I always liked to observe my Teta make her recipes and share generations of culture in a dish.

Like I said, food is sacred in my family. Middle eastern cuisine has such a heart warming and special essence, which is why I try to combine both of my cultures in the dishes I create. Both are so unique and have so many interesting flavors and stories to tell.

What is your go-to meal when you are in a rush?

Pita bread or saj bread with white cheese, za’atar, olive oil and sea salt or green apples with lemon and salt.

Favorite dish?

This is the hardest question anyone can ask jaja! I am a foodie, I love food too much, making it hard to choose just one. But one of my favorites is grape leaves and tabbouleh.

Everything in life can teach lesson. In the grand scheme of things, everything happens for the best; life works in mysterious ways. Always Trust yourself and trust that everything happens for a reason, todo pasa and  don’t let anything ruin your inner peace and happiness. Do what makes you feel alive.
